About the Artist
I have spent my life celebrating and noticing beauty.
As a professor of writing and literature, I learned to pay attention to the small things that reveal the truth. I find myself doing the same now with watercolor.
I paint the places and moments that make me smile: a garden overflowing with color, light moving through trees, a familiar landscape, or a place that has become part of a community’s memory.
I paint how a place feels to me. I paint the beauty I see in nature on walks and from memory. I paint because beauty matters. I believe it can make us more attentive, more grateful, and more willing to see what is right in front of us.
Much of my work begins close to home in Dayton, Ohio, including my Oakwood Landmark Series, which celebrates the familiar places that shape the beauty and character of my community.
Painting has become my way of paying attention and of offering that beauty to others.
Look.
See the beauty here.

Daffodils are my favorite because they arrive in the Midwest exactly when you need them most: at the end of a long, gray winter. SOLD

Commissioned as a thank-you gift. SOLD
Some gardens seem to overflow with their own happiness. I wanted to capture that feeling of abundance and color.
In Oakwood, spring means the daffodils will steal the show on Ridgeway walks. Their joyful explosion of yellow makes everyone happy.
I am drawn to the places where a quiet landscape suddenly comes alive with color. A field of pink calms the soul.
I love gardens that feel a little untamed, where flowers, leaves, light, and even a passing butterfly seem to belong to one another.
I love Northern Michigan with my whole heart. The birch trees and deep woods opening up to Lake Michigan always take my breath away.
Sometimes I am less interested in the individual flowers than in the feeling of being surrounded by them.
I love a path that disappears into a garden. It makes me wonder what is just beyond what I can see.
SOLD
I love the feeling of being surrounded by a garden that has completely taken over with color and life in every direction.
SOLD
I love the curve of this path through the wildflowers with the mountains in the back.

This happy centerpiece graced our table during a bridal shower given to a dear friend's daughter. I loved painting it as a way to celebrate the bride and her mom. SOLD
The moment sunlight begins to break through a heavy sky, the whole landscape seems to wake up. I painted this during a time of grief and feel that it honors the human experience well. SOLD
Some of the most beautiful gardens are made more beautiful by the sky above them. A dear friend bought this painting: it was the first one I sold.
A very special friend asked me to paint her favorite flower bed in front of her home. Capturing this beautiful moment in summer for her made me so happy. SOLD
